[comic] – kids these days

I teach at my local Sunday school every week, and there’s this really cute 5 year-old whose older sister is a One Direction fan. Hence what happened in this comic ha.. ha..

But seriously though, kids these days are prematurely exposed to things that might not be age-appropriate for them. No wonder they grow up and mature much faster now, especially in this digital age where everything is readily available at the touch of our fingertips.

I’m pretty sure when I was 5 years old I was still playing with LEGO and puzzles, whereas my 3 year-old nieces are already pros at handling tabs and smartphones. I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Would you allow under 5 year-olds to handle gadgets so freely?

a/n: sorry for the hiatus, the past month has been hectic because of the long public holiday here in Indonesia and I’ve been out of the house almost every day, getting some good quality ohana time, and haven’t had time to draw any comics. Thanks for being patient!

  1. We held out in providing our son a smart phone until his 12th birthday. It is sometimes troublesome to see him fill every spare minute by watching something on his phone but it seems to be an epidemic. I’m happy about Pokeman Go because he at least goes out to the local park to play.

    1. yes, I agree. I know that most parents nowadays think of gadgets as the easiest way to keep their kids entertained. But the things that a kid can access on the internet is frankly scary, even with those parental control features. And I think Pokemon Go might just be the next epidemic!

    For better or worse, your point is all too true. I look at my nieces and nephews in high school today and have to laugh when I think of how comparatively naive I was at that age!

  4. I’m not a parent, but ask a lot of questions of friends who are–most of them have a lot of common sense. They simply limit the time their kids can have in front of any electronics–from TV to games. One friend with a 6, 4 and 3 year old plays with them outside all year round. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of them with electronics. Just proves it can be done. Age appropriate (from when we were kids!) can still be the norm.

    1. Yes, I agree that it falls to the parents to take responsibilities as to how exposed a child is to technology. I just think that it’s getting increasingly difficult nowadays to keep kids away from it. I hope I can raise any future kids I may have with the right balance!

    I always love your comics. I’m not sure if I mentioned this before, but my husband has a comic book. He wrote it though and had someone else draw the illustrations.

    I think it is a right of passage to be shocked at the next generation. But I grew up in Florida when I was little. Until I was 8 years old, I would go outside almost every day and play. I moved to Pennsylvania when I was 9 and I started spending every afternoon playing video games. I much preferred the earlier part of my childhood. So I think there is probably something lost to being hooked up to technology so young. I really just loved using my imagination. I imagine you did too since you are so creative now.

    1. ooh, what does your husband write about in his comic books? any link to it? I’d love to have a look at it.

      and yes, I agree with you. The best parts of my childhood involved playing hopscotch and playing boys vs girls tag and just generally running around. It’s kinda sad to think that some kids might not get to experience all that. I did get into the gaming phase too when Playstation first came out but I’m so glad I got to have a childhood before technology and the internet took over.
