In honour of Chinese New Year tomorrow, here’s a comic concerning my Chinese language skill (or lack thereof). Being Chinese and speaking Chinese are two completely different things. Obviously.

post-CELTA thoughts
This post is a little late but… I survived!
As you may know from my previous post, I did a CELTA course last month and I can honestly say that it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The course was so enriching and I learnt so much and met so many like-minded people that I (almost) didn’t want it to end. For those of you thinking of doing the CELTA, here’s my experience of the four weeks to give you an idea of what to expect.
pre-CELTA thoughts
Next month I will be embarking on my CELTA journey. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the abbreviation, it’s a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It’s pretty intensive as far as courses go; it runs for a whole month and candidates are expected to attend Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
do I have a weird accent?
“You have such a cute accent, where are you from?”
This is the general question that I get asked whenever I introduce myself to someone for the first time. I then proceed to answer with “I’m from Indonesia but I’ve lived in the UK for eight years,” a sentence I’ve said so many times, I’ve lost count. Their faces will morph into ones of mostly shock and awe, followed by confusion. “How come you don’t have a British accent?” they continue to ask, at which all I could do is laugh and say with a shrug, “don’t I?”
